It was so nice to see everyone over the break, but I'd rather have done it at a ReSearch reunion instead of a funeral.

It's hard to even imagine a world without Frank Bush in it. He was one of a kind.

At the wonderful service the night before the funeral, my dad talked about meeting Frank and Frank getting him to come to Tech. The Bushes were the first people I met when I moved to Tennessee. I babysat Sarah and Stephen when they were young. When Frank's mother moved in with them, I interviewed her on tape so they could have some of her stories for posterity. That's how I knew him as a friend of the family.

Then in college, I went to the Search retreats that he and Sheila helped lead, so we got to know them as adult friends. That's when I realized that Frank was actually funny!

Whenever we came back to town, we would stop by the Computer Center to say hi to Rick Cashion, Joel Seber, and Frank. It's so weird to think of Cookeville without Frank, since he is entwined with pretty much my entire history in Tennessee.

Of course, in addition to missing Frank, I'm pretty freaked out. He was about my father's age. As far as I know he had been in pretty good health. He had gotten in shape several years ago--dropped some weight, started hiking and such. He was hanging out and talking with his family at the holidays and just collapsed and couldn't be revived. I tell you, other than traumatizing your family by dying in front of them (I can't even imagine), that's the way to go. I'm so glad the Bush family had some great times together over the holidays before Frank died.

That's about the most I can really put together in reaction to the ridiculousness of a world without Frank. It just doesn't make sense. And I can't even begin to think about it without crying. So I mostly try to not think about it. Yes, I'm sad about it. But also it just doesn't make sense. Frank was such a huge presence that his absence is just illogical, incomprehensible.
